Weird accident

Went for my New Years ride today. Climbing a hill and shifted down to my
"granny", heard a weird shifting noise and then a "bang" and parts of the
rederailor and jockey wheel went through my back wheel, bent the rear
dropout and probably knocked the rear wheel out of true. Anyone have any
ideas about what would cause this? Can the rear dropout be straightened,
frame is steel. Thanks for any help.

It sounds like you shifted your derailleur into your spokes.
This is an indication that your derailleur was out of
adjustment -- the lower adjustment screw should not allow
movement this far.
I've had this happen to me once, in the winter when there
was substantial ice in the derailleur. I don't know whether
the presence of ice somehow overrode the adjustment screw.

I would think the steel frame could be straightened, but you
need a more local opinion.

It's also possible that the quick release slipped because it wasn't
tightened down enough. Since you shifted to the granny, you may have
been putting more than usual pressure on the chain.

Or maybe forcibly pedalling through chain suck, with the
doubled-over portion of chain going through the rear der?
In wich case a bent granny ring could very well be causal.
Steel grannies can be manhandled more-or-less straight
again, with make-do prying implements such as very
large screwdrivers.

cheers,
Tom
