Weird accident

Thanks all for your opinions. Bike is in the "shop" now, new chain (2500
miles on bike) new DR and new Cassette. Should
be back on the road soon.

Another possiblility could be a protruding link pin on the chain which
might have caught on the derailleur cage.
I think that happened to me to cause my rear derailleur to trash into
the spokes. Twisted a thick steel dropout as if it were butter. I
was lucky the shop managed to bend back the dropout into position
without breaking it. I'm not going to re-use a used Shimano link pin
ever again.
