I was surprised, too, but did run into some similar stories
on the "Icebike" list.

By soaking it on motor oil for a long time I was able to get
it to turn usefully again and use it for a few days, but I'd
ordered a replacement and put the replacement in when it
arrived. The replacement's on it's 5th winter, so it's doing
a lot better.

If you think about the leverage involved on a BB, it has to
be pretty jammed up before it won't turn unless I'm standing
up on it with all 200 pounds. My theory is that it was some
combination of salt and rust.

You're right, I am. Today my service manager and I spent a bit of time
taking photos of how bad it got, and what's involved in cleaning her up.
More web pages devoted to her shortly as we get her back in shape again!

Of the things I really dislike, one of the most-annoying seem to be the
170mm cranks. I could stick something "common" on her, but it just seems
like there should be a minimum of Shimano equipment on a bike like that.
Alas, no old Campy 175mm doubles in stock, and I can't see spending a whole
lot of money on anything modern. But if I could get the right cranks, and
then maybe figure a way to work Ergo shifting on a 120mm tail section...

I'll keep my eyes open for a nice old Sugino 2-ringer w/ 175mm
cranks for ya :-)

Thanks, but I think it needs to be Campy. Maybe an old Athena or something
like that. The one exception I'll make is that I'll probably use a Phil BB
if the crank requires something that predates modern cartridge BBs.
