I saw a very cool device called a "Speedlifter" that corrects the issue
of the threadless headsets. Unfortunately, it's quite expensive, and not
sold in the U.S..

I think that he was referring to a quill stem, and the adjustment up and
down, not just the adjustable reach stem that you are referring to.
There's another issue with the threadless headset on a touring bike as
well, if you're shipping your bike, you have to reassemble a threadless
headset and get the compression correct, while this ia not an issue with
a quill headset. It is probably easy for you to do, but it isn't so easy
for someone not experienced with assembly.
Let's face it, most of the touring bicycles have kept the threaded
headset for a very good reason, while Trek went to the threadless
headset to save money and simplify manufacturing. As another poster
stated, this has been pointed out to them on numerous occasions, but
they just don't care.
Touring bikes are a pain in the butt for a manufacturer, you have to
keep using a more expensive chromolly frame, you need more expensive
wheels, you need a threaded headset, the frame is larger, the gearing is
different etc. All for a product with a very small T.A.M.. | |
