It's almost spring and outdoor riding season. I have written a bicylce
log program that you can try. The old DOS version was well reviewed in
Velo-News ages ago. This is in Visual Basic 6 using an access database
to hold the data. (you don't need either for it to work). Check it

I hope the program was written better than the webpage, as the text
") document.write(" shows up a few times and the link to the images was
broken.

I hope the program was written better than the webpage, as the text

Yeah - I use Firefox, and all of the screenshots showed as "document.write"
errors.

Also...the download/install stuff was pretty cryptic. I've not yet been
able to get it to run.

I wasn't clear about whether or not it was necessary to download the "Full
Package Part 2", but I was unable to do so when I tried. It's a cab file,
not a zip file, so perhaps my browser's getting confused.

Also, there was an error message from geocities that the page had exceeded
its bandwidth allocation when I attempted to download "Just the executable
file".

No offense, but that's not even ready for beta test. I'm a professional
software developer, and was unable to get the program installed or working
correctly. Specific problems included:

1) None of the screenshots on the web page work (I tried both IE and
Firefox).

2) Unable to download due to "this user has exceeded their bandwidth
allocation...try again in one hour".

3) The first download file is a zip, but the second is a cab file. Clicking
on the cab file link does not download it (in IE or Firefox). Instead, I had
to right-mouse click and select "Save Target".

4) After finally getting the files downloaded, and unzipping cab1, I tried
the install. But, it tells me that some of my system components are out of
date. This happened on both Win 2000 and Win XP (both with all OS
updates) - this is a potentially scary message that could cause many to
abort the install process.

On my XP machine, I allowed the update of whatever "system components" it
was complaining about. The install process then required a re-boot
(something that should not be necessary). It also required that I re-run the
install process a second time following the re-boot. When I did, I got
several more error messages about the install program attempting to install
an older file than one I'm already running (very scary, non-intuitive
errors, easy for a user to screw up). After finally getting through the
install error messages, it said "Installed OK".

5) I started the program, and selected "Road Ride" to log a road ride. But,
several error messages came up and the program aborted.

6) Started it again, and it told me that it could not find the mdb file.

At this point, I gave up.

Clearly, both the web site and the install process are in need of a lot of
work. Sorry if I sound harsh, but I know from painful experience that
install packages are difficult to get right (especially since it appears
you're using the built-in PD Wizard from VB), but they're also critical as
they're the first thing a user sees when they try to use your software.

Actually, I log my miles on [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] so I can see how
I compare with every one else on the site. No downloads, see from any
computer with internet browser, no files that might be deleted. No
cost to sign up, suggested donation if you keep using it is US$10 a
year.

I use an Excel Spreadsheet myself.
I can make charts and graphs if need be.
Easy to see my improvements as time goes on.

Of course a simple paper and pen log book worls excellent too. No
electricity, no batteries, no computer.
Our local "Half Price Books" store has a bunch of the cute "In Gear, A Bike
Journal" published by Chronical Books circa 2000, for a good price.
It is a fun book to keep all your cycling notes in.
