Hey there

I use a XC bike i built myself from parts i've bought individually, but when your buying a "really good brand" what your really buying is the brand designed frame, with other companies parts installed on it, so be aware that the best brand is still limited by your budget constraints.

Make sure you go for a bike with good componentry!

Specialized is the market leader, and their bikes are very good quality with a large range of choice from the amatuer to the champion.

I, personally REALLY like Scott bikes, they have very durable frames, great componentry - very similar to specialized to be honest and incredible looks, aswell as some sweet frame decals, and a large range of carbon fibre mountain bikes, which i must say make such a difference for XC racing.

They also have a really nice range of women specific bikes if your interested in one.

But yeah, i guess the best test for this is to ask myself which, if i were offered for free, would i go for. The answer has to be a Scott.

A bike is quite a personal thing, so look at some of the designs, see if you like them, and then choose what price tag matches your componentry needs.

Remember, a bike is only a sum of its parts. Theres no point buying a big brand fancy frame if it wont deliver the goods.

Good luck with the shopping and most importantly enjoy yourself!

P.S Bikes are generally cheaper if you buy them on the web, but if you buy it from a bike shop (Halfords does not count, you wont find a leading brand there) you have the added benefit of being able to test drive it before you buy.

So go to your local shop, take the bike you want for a spin, and when your done buy it on the web!

have a look at

If its female specific bikes ---its best to consult the websites of Raleigh, though you can easily get the cruisers, the comfort bikes and even the hybrids. Seven, Titus, Intense, Iron Horse, Marin, Felt are some brands that have vast models to choose from ( the budget will be for hardtails, full suspension rigs though hardtails are sweet for ladies). Anyway---if you're not gonna search for female-specific bikes---there's TONS of bikes you gotta test-drive at a bike shop near you!

Depends upon what you want to do and how much money you want to spend. However, a good guide as to the good machines out there is:

www.mbr.co.uk

You will find thier bike review in price order on this site.

Schwin is not good.

There are a few women specific geometry bikes out there, but try Specialized or Scott first.

Luck
