i'm new to cycling?

i can't jog anymore because of shin splints, a doctor told me i should try to cycle instead of run. the one major question i have is what kind of bike do i get without spending 500 dollars. i would be using it on streets and paths. if someone could give me an example of what kind of bike i would appreciate it. weather it be a mountain bike with shocks and such or a street bike with the skinny tires. i have no idea how much i should even ride, some have told me 5 miles a day is good to stay in shape and loose some weight and some have said an average of ten miles a day.

Ryan, as a newbie I suggest you read Mountain Bike Action's website (www.mtbaction.com), Bike Radar ( www.bikeradar.com) and Bicycling (www.bicycling.com). If you want a low priced MT. BIKE, go to EBAY (www.ebay.com)---it is in the Sporting Goods category ( Mountain Bike & Parts or Road bike & Parts). You will find 'BUY IT NOW' tags on some bikes---feel free to select the budget of your choice---or you BID for some MINT condition bikes for real steals.

New cycling people must first think the safety measure of their self when you on the road get a helmet and any other safety gear putting in your body. Don't ride fast when you on the road, look to the front and back of you when you will go to the other lane of the road. Wear a shade also to protect your eyes into a dust on the street.

If you are new to cycling, make sure you got your safety gears on before cycling.I would advice you to practice cycling for one month before moving on.
