::::: Nope, I am an old lady (42). I am an attorney turned personal
::::: trainer and I work 5 am-1 pm, so I can ride a lot. The first
::::: century started out with our regular Saturday group ride, which
::::: is a slam fest from the first 1/10th mile. It's basically 4 of
::::: our local racing teams. At the turnaround (mile 30 or so)
::::: another guy and I went out farther to Doylestown. We then went
::::: back to Philadelphia. I left my guy and finished up with a lap
::::: around the Schuylkill River then home. On Sunday, a group of
::::: about 12 of us went from Philadelphia to New Hope and back. It
::::: was a very controlled ride, and I pulled a lot of the way home.
::::: Today, I picked up one other guy and pulled him to Doylestown and
::::: back to his house, (50 miles) and then went down to the river and
::::: did 4 laps before heading home, so essentially, I pulled this one

Of course they can and do train, however it takes a long time to build. The
body also does not start producing an excess of this kind of muscle fibre
until a more ripe age. Damiano Cunego is considered exceptionlly young to
win a grand Tour like this. Winning a grand Tour takes a lot of other
qualitys than endurance as compared to a century ride that is nothing but an
endurance ride. Ie no race component involved.
If you ever go to an organized century you'll probably see more 50 year olds
than 20 year olds. At least here in Sweden and I'd be really surprised if it
wasn't the same all over the world.
As for the muscle fibres I mentioned you can google for slowtwitch and
fasttwitch. I'm not certain I spelled fasttwitch right.
