Heavier riders can get better performance and avoid pinch flats by
exceeding the printed maximum inflation. Very light riders can get
better handling by slightly under inflating tires.

Did you ever notice that tire inflation pressures are often provided
as a range, not a single pressure?

I'm a bigger rider (235 lbs.), and have found that my Michelins ride
the best for me at about 125 psi. The sidewall maximum is 115 psi.
I've ridden with very light women who have found that maximum
inflation can cause their tires to feel skitterish during hard
cornering.

I believe the same principle applies here that applies to motor
vehicles/rvs...I run different pressures based on the load and this is
in accordance with the tables from tire manufacturers. Look at the
label on your vehicle door jamb...pressures are specified for specific
loads/weights.

When I commuted on my mtn bike (with fat road tires) I ran around 115
psi even though the tires were labelled for 80. I weigh 200lbs.

My bike shop also says that given good rims and good tires the
labelled pressure can be safely exceeded, within reason.

It is too bad bike tire manufacturers can't provide the same type
information.
