So I take little brother out for a lesiurely ten-mile ride this
afternoon. He's loving the new bike, I'm teaching him stuff.
It's a lesiurely ride around town, so I just hop on the bike in my
sandals. I ride MKS platform pedals with clips and straps, and the
sandal/pedal combination is, while not optimal, comfortable enough. I
hadn't had any problems with it.
We're on a quiet backstreet. We roll up to a stop sign. No problem.
I'll just slow down and stop and unclip and....wait...unclip...OOOF!
My sandal strap had somehow caught on the toe strap on the pedal and I
didn't jiggle my foot quickly enough to avoid falling over like a
moron.
I pitch over to the left, hit the pavement, and my brother starts
laughing at me. I pick myself back up, dust myself off, and do the
usual post-fall inspections: am I ok? more importantly--is the bike
OK?
Insights:
1) You will fall. Wait for it.
2) You will fall at the most unexpected moment.
3) You will fall when EVERYONE can see you being a moron.
It was all in all pretty funny, even if I have a few scrapes (my toe
got scraped, along with my knee. the toe: owwie!).
It was a beautiful day for a ride, though, and my brother was loving
the new-old bike.
